Counter-Surveillance: What a Sweep Actually Finds and What It Doesn’t
Direct answer
A sweep is RF + lens + a physical search of a space you control. Waving a detector until it goes quiet is not a sweep. A detector finds some live transmitters. It does not find a camera that is off, a tracker that is asleep, or a device that was already removed.
Most people who buy a bug detector never sweep anything. They plug it in, wave it around, hear nothing, and assume the room is clean. That is not a sweep. That is a gadget demo.
A real sweep is a method, not a product. It has three layers, and you need all three.
Layer one — RF. A spectrum analyzer or RF detector scans for active transmitters. This catches wireless cameras, GPS trackers, and listening devices that are broadcasting. It does not catch a device that is off, a device that only transmits on a schedule, or a device that uses a frequency your detector cannot see. Consumer RF detectors are tuned to common bands. Professional ones cover more, but no detector covers everything.
Layer two — lens. A lens finder or a physical inspection finds cameras that are not transmitting — or that transmit on a band your RF tool missed. This is where most DIY sweeps fail. A hidden camera with its Wi-Fi off is invisible to an RF sweep. You find it by looking, not by scanning.
Layer three — physical. The room itself. Vents, smoke detectors, power strips, USB chargers, picture frames, plants. Anything that was not there before, or anything that looks slightly off. This layer catches the devices the electronics miss — and it is the layer most people skip because it is boring.
What a sweep does not find. A device that has already been removed. A device that only records locally and never transmits. A person in the room with a phone. A sweep tells you what is in the space at that moment. It does not tell you what was there yesterday or what someone plans to put there tomorrow.
When you need a team. If the threat is serious — a competitor, an ex, a stalker, a corporate dispute — a detector in your hand is not enough. You need people who have done this before, who know the failure modes, and who can document what they find. That is what our sweep team does. California-licensed investigators from our network, proper equipment, a written report. Not a gadget and a YouTube video.
What we sell for the DIY layer. RF detectors, lens finders, and the training to use them. The Road Warrior kit covers travel. For a full sweep of a home or office, the team is the answer.
Lawful use only. A sweep of a space you control is legal. Recording a private conversation without consent is not — California is an all-party consent state. Not legal advice.
